Persistence is the key factor to the girls of the Lady Beavers. Even though they had some doubts going into the season.
After losing their star pitcher, and star player, Andreina Nunez and Jenaya Wade, the girls didn’t think they would make it to the semi-finals as they did last year, or even the playoffs.
With the addition of new players, and the returning players, the Lady Beavers looked better than expected. The leadership of Melissa Perdomo, the pitching of Je Lisa Rhodes, Robeena Raghubir, and Jessica Molina, and the hitting of Shanee Conde, Latoya Mccrae, Jessica Molina, and Robeena Raghubir, contributed to the season the girls didn't expect to have.
The Lady Beavers had a record of 15-5 including the playoffs, and went 13-4 during their regular season. The Lady Beavers who are known for their hitting and their defense, defeated every team in their division atleast once, including the arch nemesis, Flushing High School, who went undefeated last season.
In the playoffs, the Lady Beavers played School Of The Future and won by the score of 9-4. In the next round they played Springfield Gardens and won by the score of 10-6. In the quarter finals, they played their arch rivals, Flushing High School, and lost by a score of 15-5.
The girls were bummed, but it only made them more confident to do better next year. They were happy to have made it that far, and are anxious to go after Flushing next year.

SPECTULAR SEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The tennis team completed their season with a royal flush. In cards, a royal flush is perfect. In tennis, going undefeated is also perfect. Uunfortunately, the perfect season came to an end.
The Beavers pulled off one of the most spectacular achievements in sports, and it is something the Beavers accomplished only five years ago when they went 10-0 and won the championship. The Beavers were also coached by Ms. Sutera in 2003.
Last year the tennis team, with a record of 9-1, had a very good season. This year they went one step forward with a 12-0 record.
After the Beavers went undefeated, they headed off to the playoffs. They entered the playoffs as the number one ranked team full with confidence. "It feels good to go perfect and now we are confident and we feel like we can win it all," said junior Philipnary Thuyamany, who plays first singles for the Beavers.
During the playoffs, the Beavers received a first week bye, not playing any team in the first round because of their undefeated record throughout the season. The Beavers played John Adams High School in the second round and defeated them by a score of 5-0. In the third round, the Beavers went up against High School Environmental Studies and defeated them 4-1.
After winning fourteen games in a row the Beaver's winning streak sadly came to an end.The winner of this game will advance to the championship game, the Beavers played Manhattan Center/Science & Math in the next round. They lost by a score of 3-2 in the semi finals, but unfortunately the Beavers couldn't defeat Manhattan Center/Science & Math, their worthy opponent. Hugo Doliveira won his match by a score of 2-0, he played the third singles. Richard Sigh and Gagandeep Singh won their match by a score of 2-0. That was the only loss that the Beavers had in their season, that loss was by Manhattan Center/Science & Math High School, the team that won the championship.
The Beavers made it all the way to the semi finals. "Loosing in the playoffs was crushing, but I felt happy because of the wonderful season we had and how far we made it. It feels good knowing that we lost to a worthy opponent, the team that won the championship".
Apparently in cards the best player doesn't always win, and the underdog can came out on top, and this happend against the beavers.

Cutting is Addictive
Cutting is very addictive, almost like a drug. The more students cut, the more they engage in it. Speaking from former experience, I can honestly say the road to rehab isn’t easy.
The question everyone asks is why do students cut school and classes? Students cut classes because they don’t want to be in class dong work. Instead, students would rather be anywhere doing anything they consider “fun.”
“Fun” activities include hanging out with their friends, getting food or going to the mall. Some students cut to get away from the homework, classwork and the test. “Cutting is addictive because you get away from the school work and you have fun and you have no work to worry about,” stated Gaitree Persaud.
Students then become addicted to cutting and they continue to skip classes and sometimes school. This leads to the drop in grades and students getting left behind.
When students who cut start going to class and doing their work, the day seems to take forever and never seems to finish. “If you cut all the time and you stay all day in school, the day seems to take forever,” stated Wazir Mohamed, a retired cutter.
Cutting is addictive and it affects your grades. If students want to do well in school they need to stop cutting and go to class. The road to rehab isn’t easy but the outcome is worth the trip.

Tennis
Jamaica High School's tennis team had a stunning record of 9-1 last season, and made it all the way to the championships but came up short. They were coached by Susan Sutera, a well known coach and gym teacher at Jamaica High School. With a new season starting, Jamaica's tennis team is back with a vengeance to take it all this year.
Jamaica was 4 points away from being crowned champions, something Jamaica last saw in the 2002-03 season. Jamaica, who lost in the championship to Leon M Goldstein HS for Science by a score of 4-1, is back to take another shot at the championship.
As the 2008 season for tennis starts, "the plans for the beaver's tennis team is to make the playoffs, and win the championship" stated Philipnary Thuyamany, a returning player who played in the championship of last season for Jamaica.
They plan to make it to the championships by practicing harder, getting more experienced, and playing as a team.
Jamaica's tennis team is practicing for their new season to make this season one win better than they did last year, and that one game is to win the championship. The team is hungry and they want to take it all after coming up a little short last year.

A DAY TO THINK PINK
When you think about breast cancer, you probably think medically. But breast cancer has more impact on sports than any other medical illness.
What is breast cancer exactly though? Breast cancer is a malignant tumor in the breast region of a woman's body. The effects of breast cancer can be damaging to a woman's health and even fatal.
"It is affecting many more women, where many more women are being diagnosed with Breast Cancer," said Ms. Cheroquit, a counselor at Jamaica High School.
Even though Breast Cancer is associated with women most of the time, men can also receive breast cancer too.
So if both genders can
get it then, why pink?
"Pink is usually associated with women," Ms. Cheroquit added.
When you think breast cancer, you don't think sports, do you?
February 13, 2008 marked the twenty second anniversary for the recognition of women in mainstream sports. this is an opportunity for women to show that they too are athletes not only men.it is also an opportunity for all females to support female athletes.

This is a day where women stand up and show that they are athletes and this influences other women and make them play sports. when asked about the significance of the day Ms. Sutera stated that "this is an opportunity to showcase girls who play sports and take a backseat to boys."
Girl sports is not as recognized like the boys sports. this day is a day where the women athletes let everyone know that they play sports and not only men can play sports and be great at it. this day also lets women know that there are sports out there that they can participate in.
When asked what this day signified for Ms. Sutera the said " i am always honored to be involved in sports because of the struggle she went through because of the lack of programs available for her." she is very happy to coordinate programs for female athletes and she stated that " it is a lot of work but it is worth the appreciation.
